I Am Nazzy
Nazzy the Mic is back with her first project since joining GSR Music, closing out 2025 with I Am Nazzy, on December 26. I’ve been following Nazzy over the past three years, writing about several projects. Two tracks are included on this album: “Last Scar” and “GStarr.” Starting out, Nazzy created music as an outlet to process pain and internal turmoil through raw lyricism. She laid her feelings about growing up a queer, Muslim teenager in Philadelphia bare on the mic.
It’s been a few years, and I Am Nazzy presents a more secure and self-assured person. But she hasn’t changed who she is – and her lyrics remain king. They’re still scathingly honest and the focal point of each track. Minimal accompanying arrangement leaves her exposed, removing the cushion that comes from layered instrumental voices. But that’s her skill, drawing the audience in with simply her authenticity.
Nazzy opens the album with a glimpse into her romantic life. The first three tracks, “Let Me Know,” “The Side,” and “My Love” take the audience on a journey through the excitement of meeting someone new, allowing yourself to be vulnerable, slipping into desire, and finally falling in love. The tracks are brighter, with more R&B influence than previous projects, but still building a story with direct language and open communication.
In the second half of the album, Nazzy pivots back to basics. “2 bodies” and “Wassup” are intense and introspective, recounting how past obstacles and barriers women face in the industry have shaped her. Once again, beats and minimal synth or keys support the vocals, and the overall message doesn’t have to fight to be heard. These struggles set the stage as her story flows to “Big Shark,” “GStarr,” and “Boom Bap.” In the next three tracks, Nazzy makes it clear she’s arrived. Any self-doubt or frustrations she faced in her life are in the past now, and she’s here to rock the boat. “Big Shark” showcases Nazzy’s technical skills with quick flow and minimal breaks. She has nowhere to hide in her arrangement, but she doesn’t need it – she’s here to stay. Closing out I Am Nazz is “Last Scar,” juxtaposes her need for a hardened exterior with an innocence and desire to grow. It cleanly wraps up the album – authentic and honest.
Nazzy the Mic has been putting out independent projects for over 5 years, but this is her first album with her new label, GSR Music. Every year she seems to grow more and more, so make sure to keep an eye on Nazzy the Mic. It’s only the beginning.
