MAKE A SCENE

New York-based artist Krystofer Maison released their debut EP, MAKE A SCENE, on March 29th. Classically trained, Maison has insane vocal range and a rich velvety tone, which they are known for pairing with theatrical arrangements to create dramatic, 80’s-inspired pieces. Despite being four tracks, MAKE A SCENE has all the makings of a full-fledged rock opera. Each song functions as an “act,” representing a different stage in Maison’s journey: revival, restoration, reflection, and release. In totality, the EP is dramatic and lush, with layers of sounds supporting Maison’s vocal skill and control. MAKE A SCENE was created at Invite Only Studios in Manhattan with producer James Rushin.

Act I, “Silhouette,” is equal parts a reclamation of self and ode to Cate Blanchett. Techno beats fall like rain drops, flitting about to create a supernatural backdrop. Pulsing club beats and dancing synth exude upbeat confidence as Maison emerges. Always camera ready, Maison’s mindset is everything. They’re already a star, asserting, “I’ll shape my own silhouette.” Just like Cate Blanchett, they’re not trapped in a single role, a single niche. Instead, they write their own story every day. The beat pushes forwards, keeping energy levels high and not giving Maison any time to shy away.

Following is Act II, the dark and moody “Let the Credits Roll.” A cheering crowd fades out, bringing sweeping strings and thundering bass to the front. They swim dramatically under the vocal line, slowly marching forward. Suddenly, there’s a meter change, with rapid strings and lyrical phrasing taking the listener up the hill of a roller coaster. Two bold drum beats ring out, and the cart drops down the track as Maison hits back with their full vocal power. The voice swings from low to high like a pendulum, elevated with electric guitar riffs and use of the entire drum kit. A brief spoken section peeks through, with chanted affirmations and haunting harmonies, before returning to the chorus. It’s gorgeous and regal, knocking you over with every phrase.

Every story needs a show stopping ballad, and that’s what Act III brings. “Cigarettes of Love” showcases Maison’s higher register, vocals floating over a piano countermelody and brushes on a snare. Delicate instrumentals give the lyrics an opportunity to tell a heartbreaking story of an addictive relationship, filled with betrayal but impossible to quit. Cellos and increased drum presence bring on the bridge, while Maison uses bigger vocal swings to convey the passion in their soul. Vocal runs and dominant chords create tension, before a key change finally allows for release. No matter the pain, Maison is grateful because it taught them a valuable lesson and it means they are still alive. An emotional run brings the piece to a close, followed by a deep exhale as they purge their soul.

Closing out MAKE A SCENE, Act IV envelops listeners with the anthem “Neon Halos.” Clean electric guitar lines and twinkling synth paint a magical soundscape, quickly joined by classic rock drums. A love letter to New York City, the rousing arrangement makes it hard to sit still. An inspiring earworm, it makes you want to get up and dance. The big energy of the song lends itself to the soundtrack of a coming-of-age film or an ad for New York. Maison slides smoothly through rapid lyrical phrases while still showcasing their vocal range. Big hits in the drums and cutting guitar keep the energy and drama high until the break. For just a brief moment, the glittery synth swirls around over held out vocal harmonies. The harmonies build, arriving back at the chorus to finish. The final line declares “we feel fine,” an impactful ending to this emotional journey.
In addition to creating this EP, Maison also gives their time and talent to advocacy work. They’ve been a part of Project Blackbird, Pride at The Park in June 2023, andTime Out NY's Best Pride Month Events, just to name a few. Krystofer Maison will be hosting a release party and concert at the iconic Avenue A venue, Drom on April 7th. If you’re around, be sure to pick up your tickets here. These tracks deserve to be heard live, and I cannot wait to see it.
